A 20th Century Fox Pictures Release 
 
       "May the Force be with you." 
 
With this picture, writer-director George Lucas simply reinvented the 
sci-fi film, taking us to unimaginably exotic places (most famously, a 
seedy cantina full of aliens), while drawing upon the familiar 
conventions of the movie Western (and the history of the Roman Empire) 
to create an extraordinary epic of good versus evil. Farm lad Luke 
Skywalker (Mark Hamill) goes off to fight the evil Empire, teams up 
with a space cowboy (Harrison Ford), and rescues a princess (Carrie 
Fisher). Lucas also astounded us with his hardware: two idiosyncratic 
robots, ships that fly through space with a grace and momentum 
previously unseen, and a semimechanical villain, Darth Vader, who 
lives deliciously in our nightmares. John Williams' majestic score and 
the ingenious sound effects propel the adventure along dramatically.
