It's a Wonderful Life

       "I suppose it'd been better if I'd never been born at all." 
 
Anytime you need a good, honest cry, watch director Frank Capra's 
sentimental reworking of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Noble Jimmy 
Stewart runs the family bank (on which all of Bedford Falls depends), 
sacrificing himself time and again for friends and kin. When disaster 
looms, he wishes he'd never been born, and an angel must show him what 
life in town would have been like without him (much, much worse). The 
film's warm characterizations, filtered through Capra's sympathy for 
the common man, are irresistible, and Bedford Falls epitomizes our 
most heartfelt, nostalgic fantasies about Norman Rockwell's America.
