       "We've got to start thinking beyond our guns. Those days are 
closing fast." 
 
The Western was never the same after Sam Peckinpah made The Wild 
Bunch. Its shockingly balletic scenes of slow-motion violence exposed 
the dark underpinnings of the genre, while its strangely sympathetic 
gallery of mercenary gunmen obliterated the traditional romantic view 
of the Western hero. Led by the aging, leathery William Holden, the 
title characters waste innocent bystanders without compunction, but 
when one of their own is held prisoner and tortured by a corrupt 
Mexican general, they willingly sacrifice themselves in the name of 
loyalty. Robert Ryan gives one of his greatest performances as the 
corrosively bitter "Judas goat" hired to track down Holden, his former 
saddle partner. The magnificent photography is by Lucien Ballard.
