This Oscar winner for Best Picture, Director, Screenplay, and Actor is 
the most important gangster picture ever made. It is so visually 
seductive, its images and characterizations so iconographic, that 
real-life Mafiosi have admitted to patterning their lives after it. 
Director Francis Ford Coppola vividly lights the members of the 
fictional Corleone Mafia family against black backgrounds, taking his 
cue from the chiaroscuro of Renaissance paintings; the Corleones 
become Borgias. Screenwriters Mario Puzo and Coppola romanticize the 
Mafia's moral code and sense of family even as they expose 
double-dealing, betrayal, and violence. Oscar winner Marlon Brando 
simmers as Don Vito; Al Pacino is the young Americanized son who is
