The Palm Beach Story
Comedy, 1942: 90 minutes
A Paramount Pictures Release
"Chivalry is not only dead, it's decomposed."
The most audaciously constructed of Preston Sturges's comedies, The
Palm Beach Story is a breathless roundelay of romantic complications
impeccably executed by Claudette Colbert, Joel McCrea, Mary Astor, and
Rudy Vallee. McCrea's architectural ambitions lead his spirited wife
(Colbert) to seek bankrolling from a wealthy Floridian (Vallee), who
falls helplessly in love with her. One of Sturges's most gloriously
improbable casting coups, Vallee's incarnation of the ineffable square
J. D. Hackensacker III sets the tone for the film's delirious
misalliances. Astor's risqué innuendos continually stretch the
boundaries of Hays Office prudery, while Colbert's breezy charm and
McCrea's appealing nonchalance are equally delightful. --Joseph
