Double Indemnity 
 
Noir, Romance, Thriller, 1944: 106 minutes 
A Paramount Pictures Release 
 
       "Do I laugh now, or wait till it gets funny?" 
 
Fred MacMurray plays a cool-cat insurance salesman who thinks he's 
figured out all the angles on the perfect murder. Unfortunately for 
him, his partner in crime (a bleach-blonde Barbara Stanwyck, oozing 
sex and just about defining the term "femme fatale") is even more 
devious than he is. Edward G. Robinson provides the film's moral 
backbone as the insurance investigator on the case. The story is told 
in flashback by a dying MacMurray, so we know he's doomed from the 
start--as most noir protagonists are. Billy Wilder directed and 
co-scripted with Raymond Chandler from a novel by James M. Cain--movie 
dialogue doesn't get much snappier. --Carmel Dagan
