Director Joseph Mankiewicz's masterpiece is a study in stealth and 
cunning, and a far more frightening film in this era of stalking than 
it was when it premiered. It's also one of Hollywood's wittiest 
efforts--with George Sanders brilliant in his Oscar-winning role as 
theatre critic Addison de Wit. Anne Baxter more than holds her own 
against a fine cast as the scheming Eve, a conniving fan who hopes 
that by playing the sycophant to her idol, actress Margo Channing, she 
herself will ascend to stardom. As Margo, Bette Davis delivers one of 
screen history's great iconic performances, right up there with Gloria 
Swanson's Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard. --David Mermelstein
