       "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." 
 
L. Frank Baum wrote dozens of Oz books, but (despite many futile 
imitators) this remains the one true Oz movie. Judy Garland is an 
immortal Dorothy--lifted by a twister out of a black-and-white Kansas 
and deposited in a Technicolor fairyland ruled by the Wicked Witch of 
the West (Margaret Hamilton, whose wart-nosed fury holds this fantasy 
together). In Dorothy's quest to meet and be sent home by an unseen 
and unknown Wizard, she meets a dancing Scarecrow (Ray Bolger), a 
squeaking Tin Man (Jack Haley), and a cowardly Lion (Bert Lahr)--and 
is persistently accompanied by her little dog, Toto (who plays 
himself). In music, in imagery, in creating an atmosphere of magical 
belief, this is the Citizen Kane of children's movies, the one against
