Bringing Up Baby

       "Now it isn't that I don't like you, Susan, because, after all, 
in moments of quiet, I'm strangely drawn toward you, but--well, there 
haven't been any quiet moments." 
 
This crown-jewel screwball comedy finds Cary Grant at his comic best 
as an absentminded paleontologist. Katharine Hepburn's turn in the 
role of an eccentric heiress may play against type, but she proves 
herself a great comedienne. The plot is the essence of 
zany--concerning the disappearance of a bone that Grant's character 
needs desperately and the antics of a leopard named Baby--but it's the 
verbal zingers from screenwriters Dudley Nichols and Hagar Wilde that 
elevate this picture to comic Valhalla. Howard Hawks' snappy direction 
keeps the action moving at a dizzying pace, and the first-rate 
supporting cast is sublime. --David Mermelstein
