about the absurdity and futility of war, The Bridge on the River Kwai 
remains one of the greatest war movies ever made. Set in a Japanese 
P.O.W. camp in Burma during the Second World War, the film follows two 
parallel but intertwining stories: the conflict of wills between a 
rigid, by-the-book British officer (Alec Guinness) and the equally 
fanatical Japanese prison commander he defies; and the escape of an 
American prisoner (William Holden) who leads an Allied commando unit
