       "Gee, I wish we had one of them doomsday machines." 
 
An insightful, if now inevitably dated, satire on America's obsession 
with nuclear hegemony. Director Stanley Kubrick has always possessed a 
keen eye for society's foibles, but never has his skill been on better 
display than here. Black-and-white cinematography gives this picture 
exactly the hard edge it needs, though there is plenty of comic 
relief, too--often coming from the oddest of quarters. It's no 
surprise that Peter Sellers (playing three delicious roles) excels, 
but who knew that Sterling Hayden and George C. Scott would prove so 
gifted in the humor department? --David Mermelstein
