On the Waterfront 
 
Drama, Noir, 1954: 108 minutes 
A Columbia Pictures Release 
 
       "I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been 
somebody. Instead of a bum, which is what I am." 
 
A once-promising boxer becomes entangled in corrupt union politics 
along New York City's waterfront. Marlon Brando turns in another 
memorable performance as the inarticulate ex-fighter who unwittingly 
participates in a man's murder, then falls in love with the victim's 
sister (Eva Marie Saint) and decides to help the authorities smash the 
racketeers, who are led by his brother, Charlie (Rod Steiger). 
Controversial for its time--due to raw language and violence--this 
hard-hitting drama was seen by some viewers as an apologia by director 
Elia Kazan and screenwriter Budd Schulberg for their "friendly" 
testimony before the House Un-American Activities Committee. The 
gritty, black-and-white cinematography conveys a sense of poetic
