       "Are you talking to me? No, are you talking to me?" 
 
John Hinckley's unfortunate admiration for Jodie Foster's performance 
in Taxi Driver (he claimed he shot President Reagan to impress her) 
has somewhat obscured the film's brilliance as a quintessential 
expression of seventies alienation. Screenwriter Paul Schrader created 
one of the period's most emblematic characters in Robert De Niro's 
Travis Bickle, the antisocial loner who prowls the streets of New York 
in his taxicab. Director Martin Scorsese brought out all the surreal, 
hellish visual qualities of his hometown turf and kept the story 
electric with latent violence, which finally erupts in the 
controversial and almost operatically unrestrained finale. --Joseph
