Touch of Evil 
 
Noir, Thriller, 1958: 108 minutes 
A Universal Pictures Release 
 
       "He was some kind of a man. What does it matter what you say 
about people?" 
 
"Who's the boss--the cop or the law?" asks Charlton Heston's Vargas in 
Touch of Evil, crystallizing the film's central moral issue. Orson 
Welles splits his personality between his sympathetic playing of the 
corrupt cop Hank Quinlan, who habitually plants evidence to frame 
suspects, and his directorial critique of Quinlan's godlike arrogance. 
The tension is so explosive that it turns the film's border-town 
landscape into a hellish vision of comic grotesques filmed through 
distorting wide-angle lenses and enveloped in expressionistic shadows. 
This astonishing film, the first Welles had directed in Hollywood in 
more than ten years, dismayed Universal-International, which thought 
it would be getting a routine cop thriller. --Joseph McBride
