       "I know it sounds arrogant, but I'm on my way to Nashville to 
become a country singer. Or a star." 
 
Nashville's groundbreaking structure of multiple story lines and 
intersecting characters has been much-imitated, but the narrative 
audacity of director Robert Altman and screenwriter Joan Tewkesbury 
remains fascinating to watch. Ambitiously conceived as a panorama of 
American culture and changing values around the time of the nation's 
bicentennial, Nashville follows performers, support personnel, and 
fans converging on the country-music capital for a political rally. 
The surprising plot turn involving a deranged fan's assault on a 
singer seemed far-fetched at the time, but it eerily foreshadows the 
1980 killing of John Lennon. Altman's metaphoric equations of politics 
and showbiz also seem prescient in light of subsequent developments.
