       "I love the smell of napalm in the morning . . . Smells like 
victory." 
 
Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam war epic, loosely based on Joseph 
Conrad's novella "Heart of Darkness," shows the director at his most 
daring and megalomaniacal. The film, almost as noisily surreal (it won 
the Oscar for Best Sound), chaotic, and violent as the war itself, 
becomes a nightmare that grows in horror as Coppola takes us deeper 
into the Cambodian jungle. And it's all absolutely compelling. Martin 
Sheen's mission is to find and "terminate with extreme prejudice" an 
officer (Marlon Brando) who has apparently gone mad. The film's first 
half, showing a dangerous river journey, displays some of the most 
mesmerizing visual work Coppola has ever done. (His Oscar-winning 
cinematographer was the amazing Vittorio Storaro.) The great cast 
includes Frederic Forrest ("Don't get off the boat!"), Robert Duvall 
(who finds a unique new use for Wagner's "The Ride of the Valkyries" 
as the surf-crazed G.I. Kilgore), Laurence Fishburne, Dennis Hopper, 
Harrison Ford, and Scott Glenn. --Rick Schultz
