The Big Sleep 
 
1946: 114 minutes 
 
       "She tried to sit in my lap while I was standing up." 
 
Noir never got any better than this Howard Hawks picture with a script 
by William Faulkner et al. based on the Raymond Chandler novel. Cool, 
sultry Lauren Bacall plays against Humphrey Bogart, whose private eye 
Philip Marlowe most perfectly embodies the screen persona for which he 
is still famous--world-weary, cynical, yet staunchly dedicated to 
following his own moral code. In an eternally foggy L.A., Marlowe's 
always on top as he outwits pornographers, blackmailers, a shady 
nightclub owner, a bunch of tough guys, and several horny girls. The 
plot's delightfully confusing: only Marlowe can keep track of who's 
killed or double-crossed whom, which is as it should be. --Carmel
