       "We rob banks!" 
 
European critics (who caught the picture at the Montreal Film 
Festival) championed Bonnie and Clyde well before American reviewers 
grudgingly conceded its merits. One of the seminal works of the 1960s, 
the film reflected the counterculture sensibilities of the day, 
glamorizing its protagonists' anti-establishment behavior and turning 
real-life Depression-era killers Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway) and 
Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) into folk heroes. Famous for setting new 
standards of screen violence, the film was equally notable for its 
unexpected shifts of tone, from slapstick to brutal violence to 
moments of intense lyricism. Something of a pop phenomenon, the film 
started a fashion craze and rekindled the career of its 
thirty-year-old star and first-time producer, Beatty. --Jean
