       "Smile, you son of a bitch!" 
 
This fish story about a very big, very hungry shark emerged as 
director Steven Spielberg's first monster hit. When a great white 
shark attacks a beach resort at the height of the tourist season, the 
mayor (Murray Hamilton) wants it taken care of quietly. But this shark 
has other plans, so the town's police chief (Roy Scheider) teams up 
with Richard Dreyfuss, a crack ichthyologist, and Robert Shaw, a macho 
fisherman who claims he can kill it. With Jaws, Spielberg proved that 
he could create and sustain feature-level tension and suspense. He was 
already so confident that he kept the creature out of full view for 
almost ninety minutes--and still had us on the edge of our seats. The 
script is by Peter Benchley (from his novel), Carl Gottlieb, and an 
uncredited John Milius. Verna Fields' editing is sensational, and so 
is John Williams' ominous score. --Rick Schultz
