In this Best Picture Oscar winner, the most reflective film ever made 
about Vietnam, Best Director Michael Cimino never permits the horrific 
spectacle to overshadow the characters. The story follows 
Ukrainian-American factory workers Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, 
John Savage, and John Cazale from their prewar life in a Pennsylvania 
Rust Belt town through their wartime experiences and their aftermath. 
Cimino's film is a stunning exploration of how war can change a 
man--destroy him physically or mentally, or help him mature. The 
pivotal, terrifying Russian roulette scene and a series of deer hunts 
are the film's defining moments; the performances by De Niro, Oscar 
winner Walken, and Meryl Streep (as De Niro's girlfriend) are
