Hannah and Her Sisters
Drama, Comedy, 1986: 106 minutes
A Orion Classics Release
"I know "maybe" is a very slim reed to hang your whole life on,
but that's the best we have."
One of Woody Allen's sunniest, most optimistic films, Hannah and Her
Sisters can be viewed as a companion piece to Crimes and
Misdemeanors, the life-affirming yin to Crimes' dark yang. Sort of a
"La Ronde" set in Manhattan, Hannah follows an extended family's
mix-and-match partnerships over a two-year period. Michael Caine is
perfect--and perfectly hilarious--as Elliot, an agent married to the
solidly dependable Hannah (Mia Farrow) but obsessed with her sensual
sister, Lee (Barbara Hershey); his performance was justly awarded the
Best Supporting Actor Oscar. Dianne Wiest, also an Academy Award
recipient, portrays the third sister, Holly, an artist manqué who
can't quite figure out what to do with her life. Writer-director Allen
casts himself as Hannah's hypochondriac ex-husband, Mickey, utterly
mismatched with Holly on the first date from hell. The cast is
uniformly excellent throughout, with Max von Sydow as Lee's lover, a
nihilistic artist, Daniel Stern as a philistine rock star, Carrie
Fisher as Holly's pushy business partner and romantic rival, and
Maureen O'Sullivan (Farrow's real-life mother) as the vain, alcoholic
matriarch of the brood. Allen's beautifully structured, keenly
observed screenplay won him his second writing Oscar (after Annie
Hall). --Rick Schultz
