       "I hate the blasted army, but friendship, well, that's 
something else." 
 
Cary Grant and Victor McLaglen, playing soldiers of the Queen in 
Injah, have two problems on their hands: how to save their regiment 
from a band of vicious fanatics, the thuggees, and more importantly, 
how to keep their moony comrade-in-arms, Douglas Fairbanks, Jr., from 
marrying dippy Joan Fontaine and breaking up their boys club. (And a 
good thing, too, since the only feminine company these overgrown kids 
are fit for is Annie, the regimental elephant.) Grant, a peerless 
comedian, strikes just the right tone of high-spirited valor. Sam 
Jaffe, as the eponymous water boy whose highest aspiration is to be a 
regular British soldier, brings a touching sweetness to his role. 
George Stevens deftly blends action, high jinks, and romance in 
bringing to life the splendid script by Ben Hecht, Charles MacArthur, 
Joel Sayre, and Fred Guiol. Howard Hawks was originally slated to 
direct, and his touch is still felt. --Rick Schultz
