       "You're an immoral man, Hud. You don't give a damn." 
 
Along with The Misfits, this film (based on Larry McMurtry's first 
novel, Horseman, Pass By) is the greatest of the so-called 
anti-Westerns. An especially magnetic Paul Newman plays ne'er-do-well 
Hud Bannon, who lives on a Texas ranch owned by his stern, 
old-fashioned father, Homer (Melvyn Douglas in an Oscar-winning 
performance). Idolized by his younger brother, Lon (Brandon de Wilde) 
and rebuffed by the family housekeeper, Alma (Patricia Neal in her 
Academy Award-winning role), Hud makes life miserable for all 
concerned. James Wong Howe won an Oscar for his haunting 
black-and-white cinematography, and both director Martin Ritt and
