The Third Man 
 
Thriller, Mystery, 1949: 104 minutes

       "Next time we'll use a foolproof coffin." 
 
Graham Greene's brilliant original screenplay about postwar corruption 
in Vienna gave the cinema one of its most memorable villains: Orson 
Welles's Harry Lime. The elusive black marketeer who traffics in 
watered-down penicillin does not have a great deal of screen time, but 
his sinister presence haunts every frame of director Carol Reed's 
expressionistically twisted mise-en-sc鑞e. The world-weary atmosphere 
of blasted buildings, jaded ideals, and political treachery gives The 
Third Man a uniquely poetic ambiance, encapsulated in Anton Karas's 
zither accompaniment. The inevitable betrayal of Lime by old friend 
Holly Martins (Joseph Cotten) leaves the viewer with a taste of ashes, 
in an ending of stunning desolation. --Joseph McBride
