The first film in which Charlie Chaplin uttered a sound (albeit a 
song, not dialogue), Modern Times is a mischievous political satire of 
the conflict between the haves and the have-nots. The Tramp finds 
himself literally becoming a cog in a giant industrial machine, sucked 
into the gears of a gloriously surreal set. Unwittingly marked as a 
labor agitator, he gets a rude awakening to the perils of the working 
man. Paulette Goddard is the scruffy yet gorgeous young woman who 
accompanies him on his misadventures. The poignancy of Modern Times 
also stems from our awareness that it is the last hurrah for the 
silent cinema before even Chaplin succumbed to talkies. --Joseph
