       "Snakes. Why did it have to be snakes?" 
 
This affectionate paean to the adventure serials of the 1930s and '40s 
sends them up by violating the romantic conventions that governed the 
genre (here, a formidable swordsman gleefully brandishes his weapon, 
and Harrison Ford's Indiana Jones simply pulls out his revolver and 
shoots him). In the mid-thirties, adventurous archaeologist Jones 
travels the world in search of treasures to bring back to the college 
museum, but Indy soon finds himself battling Nazis for the lost ark of 
the covenant--and the fate of the free world. Director Steven 
Spielberg's attention to detail produces dozens of small pleasures, 
and the special-effects guys won a heap of Oscars. --Carmel Dagan
