Hamlet
Drama, 1990: 153 minutes
A Universal Pictures Release
"Something is rotten in the state of Denmark."
Though quite substantially cut, Laurence Olivier's version of
Shakespeare's best-known play has many merits. Thanks to
black-and-white cinematography, an appropriately gloomy mood permeates
the proceedings; William Walton's excellent score adds further
ambiance. And Olivier, too, seems enamored of creating atmosphere. But
it's the actor's athletic turn as the melancholy Dane that holds our
attention most. There is no ideal portrayal of the Danish prince, but
Olivier makes an excellent case for himself. Jean Simmons' Ophelia is
luminously frail and ideally cast opposite Olivier. --David

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
