Last Tango in Paris
Drama, 1973: 129 minutes
A United Artists Release
"No. No, I don't--I don't want to know your name. You don't
have a name, and I don't have a name either. No names here. Not one
name."
Bernardo Bertolucci's sexually explicit Last Tango in Paris exposes
Marlon Brando--not so much physically as emotionally, and that's a lot
more revealing. Brando, one of the most revolutionary actors of all
time, plays Paul, a middle-aged American in Paris, but he won't remind
you of Gene Kelly. Paul's wife has just committed suicide, and he is
confused and tortured. When he meets a young girl, Jeanne (Maria
Schneider), an anonymous three-day sexual tryst ensues, as his grief
emerges in a series of aggressive encounters. Set principally in an
apartment near the Eiffel Tower, the film uncovers fascinating aspects
of human (especially male) nature, while exploring thorny issues of
identity, domination, and the erotic. In his autobiography, Brando
recalls his exhaustion and subsequent decision to "never again destroy
myself emotionally to make a movie." --Rick Schultz

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
