Sweet Smell of Success

       "In brief, from now on, the best of everything is good enough 
for me." 
 
This compelling story of a megalomaniacal Broadway columnist and a 
toadying press agent in the fifties features Burt Lancaster and Tony 
Curtis at their best. Lancaster is believably cold and mean as J.J. 
Hunsecker, a character modeled on the once-all-powerful Walter 
Winchell. Hunsecker's portrayed as a grotesque man who loves the dirty 
business of destroying lives in print. Curtis's Sidney Falco moves 
toward that power like a moth to a flame; he's a sycophant for all 
seasons. The buzz of Manhattan's nightlife is memorably captured on 
location by the magnificent cameraman James Wong Howe. Elmer Bernstein 
composed the moody score. Ernest Lehman (North by Northwest) wrote the 
early drafts of Success, based on his novella, but playwright Clifford 
Odets ultimately took over; it may be his best work. --Rick Schultz
