All That Jazz

       "It's showtime, folks." 
 
In Bob Fosse's ironic, autobiographical blend of drama, fantasy, 
erotic dance, and open-heart surgery, star choreographer-director Joe 
Gideon (Roy Scheider) is working, screwing, smoking, and drugging 
himself to death. He's a charming, detached user whose self-scrutiny 
inspires imaginary production numbers and dialogues with the angel of 
death (Jessica Lange). The music deepens rather than cheapens this 
extraordinary, dangerously breathless musical, often compared to 
Fellini's 8 1/2. Scheider has never been more commanding; he surely 
earned his Academy Award nomination. The film is the towering 
achievement of Fosse's splendid career. --Carmel Dagan
