The Misfits
Drama, 1961: 124 minutes
A United Artists Release
"Honey, we gotta go some time, reason or no reason. Dyin's as
natural as livin'."
The Misfits represents both a cinematic beginning and an end: it
features playwright Arthur Miller's first screenplay and Clark Gable's
and Marilyn Monroe's last complete film roles. This poignant,
autobiographical modern-day Western, set in Nevada, about an aging
cowboy (Gable) who falls in love with an emotionally damaged woman
(Monroe), also showcases one of Montgomery Clift's best performances.
And it's all powerfully helmed by veteran director John Huston. When
Gable takes buddies Clift and Eli Wallach out to rope some wild
mustangs ("misfits") that are destined for the slaughterhouse,
Monroe's horror at seeing such innocence ruthlessly hunted down
becomes an unforgettable metaphor for the star's own fragile life (she
was, of course, married to Miller). Indeed, The Misfits is a
peculiarly disturbing movie that cuts very close to the tormented
bones of its actors. Monroe and Gable bring a touching vulnerability
to their characters, but Clift's performance may resonate the most. In
a heartbreaking moment, Clift, whose face was badly scarred in a 1950s
auto accident, calls his mother and assures her, "My face is fine,
Mom--all healed up--good as new." --Rick Schultz

Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
