Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
Drama, 1939: 129 minutes
A Columbia Pictures Release
"I'm not licked, and I'm going to stay right here and fight for
this lost cause!"
Frank Capra's masterpiece about the disillusionment of an idealistic
young United States senator provoked an uproar in Washington. Many in
the political establishment and the press corps were offended by the
film's frontal assault on the corrupting influence of big money on
American democracy. But while not flinching from the system's many
flaws and vulnerabilities, Capra and screenwriter Sidney Buchman made
the cinema's most ringing and convincing defense of American ideals.
James Stewart gave his greatest performance as Senator Jefferson
Smith, the Boy Ranger leader sent to Washington as the unwitting
stooge for a political machine. Jean Arthur is magnificent as his
cynical secretary and guide through the Washington jungle. --Joseph
McBride

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
