       "I'm gonna get drunk! I'm gonna get really drunk!!" 
 
Writer Raymond Carver and director Robert Altman are a creative 
marriage made in heaven (of necessity, in one tragic sense--Carver 
died in 1988). In this ghostly collaboration, Carver's short stories 
and Altman's trademark ensemble style bring out the best in one 
another. "Neighbors," "They're Not Your Husband," "Vitamins," and 
"Will You Please Be Quiet Please?" are among the nine stories adapted. 
Julianne Moore, Lyle Lovett, Andie MacDowell, and Tim Robbins are 
among the stellar cast Altman brings to the tangle of solitary griefs 
and fatefully mismatched marriages in various (often 
downward-trending) states of disrepair. The result is one of Altman's 
finest films, the fulfillment of a great and variegated career. --F.X.
