The Grapes of Wrath 
 
Drama, 1940: 129 minutes 
A 20th Century Fox Pictures Release 
 
       "Then it don't matter. I'll be all around in the dark. I'll be 
everywhere, wherever you can look. Wherever there's a fight so hungry 
people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever there's a cop beatin' up a 
guy, I'll be there. I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad. 
I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know 
supper's ready and where people are eatin' the stuff they raise and 
livin' in the houses they build. I'll be there, too." 
 
Though one of the finest chroniclers of America's dispossessed, John 
Steinbeck was never known for his crisp, natural-sounding dialogue. 
Luckily, that reputation was enjoyed by screenwriter Nunnally Johnson 
(who also adapted another Steinbeck novel, The Moon Is Down). Johnson, 
along with Oscar-winning Grapes director John Ford, expertly distilled 
Steinbeck's sprawling tale of Depression-era Okies moving from the 
poverty of the dust bowl to the poverty and prejudice of California. 
Henry Fonda is unforgettable as an ex-con, Tom Joad, in the role that 
should have won him the Best Actor Oscar (it went to James Stewart, 
for The Philadelphia Story). Jane Darwell won for Supporting Actress 
as Tom's enduring and hopeful mother. John Carradine's Casey, the 
reformed preacher, also makes a lasting impression. Alfred Newman's 
musical direction and Gregg Toland's evocative photography are 
first-rate. --Rick Schultz
