The Apartment

Prior to Schindler's List, this Billy Wilder comedy was the last 
black-and-white film to nab a Best Picture Oscar. A biting commentary 
on the inhumane corporatism that has come to dominate American life, 
this film beautifully marries substance with first-rate entertainment. 
Jack Lemmon takes playing the schnook to new heights here, as he tries 
to climb the corporate ladder by loaning out his apartment to 
philandering executives. Fred MacMurray, as his intimidating boss, 
puts a civilized veneer over real menace, much the same way he did in 
Wilder's Double Indemnity sixteen years earlier. Shirley MacLaine, who 
causes a fateful showdown between Lemmon and MacMurray, is at her peak 
as the much-abused Miss Kubelik. --David Mermelstein
