A Clockwork Orange
Drama, Sci-Fi, Horror, 1971: 137 minutes
A Warner Bros. Pictures Release
"There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete,
Georgie, and Dim. And we sat in the Korova milk bar trying to make up
our razudoks what to do with the evening."
Stanley Kubrick's controversial story about a violent society, based
on the 1962 Anthony Burgess novel, doesn't seem so futuristic today.
In the last two decades, violence has become horribly routine, on
screen and in life. And the state-sponsored drug therapy program that
Malcolm McDowell undergoes as Alex, leader of a roaming gang of
"droogs" with a taste for "the old in-out" and "ultraviolence," may
soon become a reality in California. McDowell revels in Kubrick's
"horror show" vision of modern life. The repugnant proceedings are
stylized, with Kubrick's use of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony figuring
significantly in the plot, as well as providing a cruel comment about
how we can't hide our brutal natures behind high art. Other classical
music (arranged by Walter Carlos for the Moog synthesizer) creates a
bizarrely comic and softening effect, allowing Kubrick to compose
scenes of beatings, rape, and murder into some mutant form of ballet.

Yesterday, all my trouble seemed so far away
Now, it looks as though they are here to stay
Oh, I believe in yesterday !
