       "A boy's best friend is his mother." 
 
Startling in its time, Alfred Hitchcock's portrait of a homicidal 
maniac still is mightily unnerving today. What makes Psycho so 
haunting is the sympathy Anthony Perkins brings to the role of Norman 
Bates, the cross-dressing mama's boy trapped in a house cluttered with 
decaying mementos of his twisted childhood. Hitchcock's audacity in 
having the leading lady (Janet Leigh) killed off early in the film has 
the effect of throwing its moral universe into chaos. That such a 
hideous deed occurs shortly after the boyish Norman makes a pathetic 
attempt to share his torment with the victim makes Psycho 
heartbreaking as well as terrifying. --Joseph McBride
