       "Playing it safe is just about the most dangerous thing a woman 
like you could do." 
 
Nicolas Cage tells Cher, who plays his brother's fianc閑, "I love 
you," and she responds by slapping him, hard: "Get over it!" The 
beauty of this offbeat romantic comedy (which understandably fetched 
an Oscar for its writer, John Patrick Shanley) is that the people it 
depicts are so passionate as a matter of daily routine that we know 
without needing to be told that her violent reaction means she loves 
him, too. Lovers either say exactly what they mean, or they say the 
direct opposite of what they mean--but they are equally understood by 
one another under the bittersweet moonlight of Shanley's lyric
