do." 
 
A poetic paean to lost American innocence, Peter Bogdanovich's second 
feature possesses all the spare beauty of a Raymond Carver short 
story. Based on Larry McMurtry's acclaimed novel, this black-and-white 
film poignantly examines a series of relationships in a tiny Texas 
town during the 1950s. An extremely well chosen cast, which includes 
Cybill Shepherd (in her film debut) and Jeff Bridges, brings bona fide 
humanity to what is, ultimately, a sad tale. Cloris Leachman's 
anguished housewife and Ben Johnson's stalwart cafe owner each 
captured supporting Oscars. Equally impressive are performances by 
Ellen Burstyn (as Shepherd's mother) and Sam Bottoms, who winsomely 
portrays a retarded boy. Bogdanovich made the sequel, Texasville, in
