Action, 1988: 131 minutes 
A 20th Century Fox Pictures Release 
 
       "Yippee-ki-yay, motherfucker!" 
 
Hollywood has been pumping out action thrillers ever since The Great 
Train Robbery, but this brash, clever picture caught the attention of 
audiences after years of moribund product from the likes of 
Schwarzenegger and Stallone. Bruce Willis plays a cynical New York cop 
stranded in a chichi L.A. skyscraper taken over by terrorists (led by 
a delightfully sinister Alan Rickman) during a company Christmas 
party. Relying on brains as well as brawn, Willis kicks some butt and 
cracks wise, while the media, police, and F.B.I. are respectively 
self-obsessed, incompetent, and murderous. Director John McTiernan's 
stunt extravaganza has spawned numerous rip-offs set variously on a 
boat, on a train, in a hockey rink, and so on. Die Hard beats 'em all.
