John Ford's most beloved film, this romantic comedy has been both 
embraced and reviled for its larger-than-life portrayal of Ireland. A 
lush Technicolor saga of an Irish-American boxer (John Wayne) 
returning to his family homestead and battling to wed Maureen O'Hara, 
The Quiet Man brims with unabashed sentiment, nostalgia, and rowdy 
physical comedy. But underlying its deceptively romantic surface is 
the protagonist's guilt-ridden need to exorcise his violent past, a 
victory achieved at the cost of his most cherished illusions. What 
makes the film so emotionally satisfying is Ford's intensely personal
