       "You and Jack have a lot of middle-class dreams for a couple of 
radicals." 
 
At the beginning of the Reagan era, Warren Beatty directed one of 
modern Hollywood's most anomalous films: an ambitious, sympathetic 
treatment of the beginnings of what Reagan would label "The Evil 
Empire." Beatty plays John Reed, the romantic young American leftist 
who went to Russia to witness the coming of revolution and stayed to 
see its idealistic goals crumbling in the face of reality. Diane 
Keaton is the free-spirited Louise Bryant, who becomes Reed's lover 
and shares his Russian adventures. Beatty's elegiac evocation of the 
hopefulness and disillusionment of the American left is given vivid 
immediacy by production designer Richard Sylbert and cinematographer 
Vittorio Storaro. Their recreation of Greenwich Village and the Soviet 
Union is buttressed by Beatty's inspired use of real-life "witnesses"
