A wacky fictional documentary-style look at thirty-six hours in the 
lives of the Beatles, Richard Lester's A Hard Day's Night shows the 
four lads from Liverpool in all their innocence and charm. As the 
recent Beatles Anthology indicates, though, this movie may be closer 
to a real documentary than we suspected. In 1964, it was the Beatles 
against the world, and the film shows the purity of their friendship 
at the start of their glorious careers. No Beatles film that came 
after A Hard Day's Night quite captured the essence of John, Paul, 
George, and Ringo. They clearly liked and protected each other, and 
our response to them was equally unambiguous, without a hint of 
jealousy. Critical response to the film inevitably compared the 
Beatles to the Marx Brothers. However, the difference, as someone once 
said, was that the Marx Brothers were crazy in a sane world, while the 
Beatles were sane in a crazy world. In any case, A Hard Day's Night 
survives as an exhilarating movie, an indelible portrait of the spirit 
of a particular time. With Wilfrid Brambell as Paul's grandfather. And
