From Here to Eternity 
 
Drama, War, Romance, 1953: 118 minutes 
A Columbia Pictures Release 
 
       "A man's gotta go his own way or he's nothin'." 
 
Fred Zinnemann's captivating portrait of army life at a Hawaiian 
barracks just before Pearl Harbor is a poignant, powerful film, much 
deserving of its Oscar for Best Picture. Daniel Taradash's 
well-written script (adapted from James Jones' best-selling novel), 
Burnett Guffey's excellent black-and-white cinematography, a 
first-rate cast, and Zinnemann's clearheaded direction all combine to 
produce a nearly flawless motion picture. Montgomery Clift, Burt 
Lancaster, and Frank Sinatra (in an Academy Award-winning role) prove 
entirely credible as soldiers. And equally convincing are Deborah Kerr 
(as a captain's adulterous wife) and Donna Reed (who nabbed an Oscar 
for her portrayal of a girl not too protective of her virtue). --David
