Do the Right Thing 
 
Drama, Comedy, 1989: 120 minutes

       "There's no end in sight from this heat wave so today the cash 
money word is chill. That's right C-H-I-L-L." 
 
Spike Lee's best film begins as a slice-of-life look at the black 
Brooklyn neighborhood of Bedford-Stuyvesant and its colorful denizens 
on a hot summer day; it ends with a race riot centered around an 
Italian-owned pizzeria and a Korean grocery. Lee may take sides, but 
he recognizes the moral complexities and ambiguities involved; his 
characters do not fit into simple categories which reliably predict 
their behavior. A uniformly excellent ensemble cast, including Danny 
Aiello, Ossie Davis, Giancarlo Esposito, John Turturro, and Lee 
himself further enriches this witty portrait of a troubled community.
