The Thin Man 
 
Noir, Mystery, 1934: 93 minutes 
A MGM/UA Pictures Release 
 
       "You should always have rhythm in your shaking. Now a Manhattan 
you shake to a fox trot; a Bronx to two-step time. A dry martini you 
always shake to waltz time." 
 
Sophisticated banter ricocheted off the walls in this delightful 
romantic comedy about two people already happily married to one 
another. Retired detective Nick Charles (William Powell) is called 
back to duty to track down a missing inventor; with assistance from 
his delightful wife, Nora (Myrna Loy), and their wire-haired terrier, 
Asta, he cracks the case. The intricacies of the plot, however, were 
secondary; the film's real appeal sprang from the relationship--and 
the chemistry--between Powell and Loy, who toss back cocktails with 
aplomb and make an adventure out of everyday life. Followed by five 
sequels, this was by far the best in the series. --Jean Oppenheimer
