Tales of a soul survivor
By Marian Theobald

Mabel Lee, Honorary Associate Professor in Chinese at the University,
has translated from the Chinese Gao Xingjian's novel Soul Mountain.
The 528-page volume, published by HarperCollins, is to be launched
next month in Sydney by the French Consul-General, M. Jean-Claude
Boimboeuf. Gao Xingjian, who is now based in Paris and who was awarded
the Chevalier de l'Ordre Des Arts et Lettres in 1992, will visit
Sydney for the launch.
The book is based on Gao Xingjian's own experiences. The 60-year-old
novelist, playwright and artist wrote in secret during the Cultural
Revolution in China, but during the 1980s, he was able to publish a
substantial number of works. He had his debut as a playwright in 1982,
with the highly successful play Absolute Signal, but it was banned in
1983.
In the same year, Gao was wrongly diagnosed with lung cancer, and then
learnt he was to be sent to a prison farm. He fled Beijing for the
remote forest regions of Sichuan, and wandered the length of the Yangtze
River. In all, he travelled 15,000 kilometres in 10 months.
The events of 1983 form the basis of Soul Mountain, which is described
by Professor Lee as "the story of one man's quest for inner peace and
freedom".
"The author employs the strategy of storytelling to disperse his
loneliness, and at the same time reconstructs his personal past as
well as the impact of the Cultural Revolution on both the human and
physical ecology of China," she wrote.
Gao left China for Europe in 1987 and now supports himself through
painting large black and white Chinese ink paintings. His plays have
been staged around the world.
Gao will give two public lectures during his visit to Sydney. The first,
in French, will be held on Wednesday, 5 July at 7pm at the Alliance
Francaise de Sydney. The second, in Chinese with English translation,
will be held on Thursday, 6 July at 5pm in Room 424 of the
University's Education Building.

切問題;把世界放在框架裏改造,導致烏托邦的破滅。
