西方媒体：就是要拿诺贝尔奖颠覆中国的文化精神
A Nobel for China

In 1902, Liang Qichao, an influential Chinese reformer, declared, "If you
want to revitalize a country's populace, you must first revitalize that
country's fiction." And so, let us hope the decision to award this year's
Nobel Prize in literature to Gao Xingjian will serve as a kind of moral
salvation for his native China. In an interview broadcast yesterday, Mr.
Gao decried China's "terror which reigns everywhere, in detention camps
and in daily life, and smothers human conscience."
Mr. Gao's award-winning novel, Soul Mountain, describes an individual's
search for roots, inner peace and personal liberty. Its themes are
anathema to every one of the prescriptive literary rules laid down in
1942 by Mao Tse-tung. For Mao, literature's primary function was to be
political; aesthetic values were to be suppressed; the writer's audience
was to consist of workers and soldiers and peasants alone; above all
else, the work must depict a sunny, idealistic future with little if any
psychological probing. By contrast, Mr. Gao -- who was sent to a
re-education camp during the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976 --
wrote for a universal audience and often invoked existential themes.
Beijing described his plays as "intellectual pollution" in 1983. He was
declared persona non grata and his works were banned in China after
the publication of La Fuite (Fugitives), which takes place against the
backdrop of the bloody 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre.
Although Chinese fiction has long displayed Mao's traditional view that
literature should serve as a moral beacon, Gao's work extols a different
kind of morality than that espoused by the Communist Party. Ironically,
the Nobel committee's announcement comes in the same week that
Beijing branded the banned Falun Gong sect a "political rival" to the
Communist Party and an "enemy of the nation." One effective way to
fight this kind of repression, as Gao has shown, is to expose the
violence inherent within it.
