Chemical Brothers 

                                           "Surrender"

                                           ★★★★ 

                                           在这个电子时代,一切的变化和
                                           淘汰都变得加速了,包括了我们的
                                           CPU的更新,包括了我们的电子/舞
                                           曲音乐的替代。就如同这个Big
                                           Beat一般,3年前,我是对它神秘
                                           着且向往着的,它的一举一动,让
                                           人在强烈的感官刺激中体会到莫名
                                           的兴奋。化学节拍下,能折衷起那
                                           么多远离的元素,Big Beat的确是
                                           热辣的钢铁熔炉。但现在,俯拾即
                                           是的重型Hip Hop/Fuck节奏,Big
                                           Beat在Skint等厂牌的迅速推动
                                           下,在诸如Fatboy Slim、
                                           Prodigy、The Crystal Method
                                           等等乐队的影响中,Big Beat迅速
                                           普及且快泛滥了,也不再让人那么
                                           轻易地感觉震撼。在这种音乐本身
                                           逐渐丧失其新鲜的刺激性后,什么
                                           才是推动它继续存在且发展的动
                                           力?或者这正是化学兄弟在
                                           《Surrender》中必须要考虑的一
                                           个问题。也是我在聆听过程中,想
                                           要得知的一个地方,没想到他们却
                                           先冷却了熔炉,准备"逃离"了。

                                           感觉出这次Big Beat熔炉的高温开
                                           始消退非常容易,唱片的第一首
                                           "Music: response"就是一个很好
                                           的提示。 充满太空感的音乐环境
                                           中,穿插起Dub/Bleep的小情趣,
                                           劈里啪啦的Bleep声,幼稚到好
                                           玩。作品退减了节拍中Funk的重型
                                           程度,而且变化弧度不再是刺激惊
                                           险,而象是回归早期Kraurock的实
                                           验甜品。只有Neol参与的"Let
                                           Forever Be"最接近他们的原来风
                                           貌。沿袭在"Setting Sun"开辟的
                                           Big Beat道路上,沉重的节拍却多
                                           少让人感觉有点循规蹈矩。但其实
                                           最差劲的是作品的名字,俗不可
                                           耐。典型的Oasis式
                                           "forever,forever"口号。让人对
                                           Neol的一贯的标榜又好气又好笑。

                                           改变并没有什么奇怪的,只是要如
                                           何改才是最要紧。Chemical
                                           Brothers这次的主要转变就是把重
                                           心移到底特律式的Techno/House上
                                           了,并且在他们曾经涉足的
                                           Psychedelic、Folk等领域继续深
                                           入。说真的,我对这个改变的感觉
                                           是很舒服的,因为在这条路上
                                           Chemical Brother做出了非常优
                                           美、迷幻、层层变化的音乐,光是
                                           感官上,就给予了笔者一份在Big
                                           Beat音乐少有的体验,他们多少延
                                           续了上张《Brother's Gonna
                                           Work It Out》的精致风格。

                                           “Under The Influence”和
                                           “Out Of Control”是两首典型
                                           的Techno/House作品。特别是后者
                                           在圆滑简洁的Techno节奏下,整体
                                           十分类似Electronic的作品,这想
                                           来是他们请了New Order中的
                                           Bernard担任主音的缘故。“The
                                           Sunshine Underground”采样了
                                           Jame Asher的“Asian Summer",
                                           长篇Psychedelic氛围浇灌下,在
                                           槌击中起伏转换,奔波流淌,决无
                                           冷场。“Got Glint”是一首现代
                                           版的House舞曲,这两首作品中,恰
                                           如其分的速度和氛围培养着一种闲
                                           散的情绪.而这种情绪其实在作品
                                           很多地方都体现出来了。大概是他
                                           们这次的侧重点之一吧。事先发行
                                           的单曲作品"Hey Boy Hey Girl"
                                           多少标榜着自己的姿态,旁白中
                                           "Star DJ's"大概就是他们想要担
                                           当的身份,音序器和Riff带来酸性
                                           和Techno节拍,这完全可以送去深
                                           夜舞场作为Rave的迷幻重药。唯一
                                           嫌不够的是至少该再延续5分钟才
                                           能更加充分发挥药力。

                                           有两首作品是笔者特别喜欢的,就
                                           是分别由Hope (MazzyStar主音)
                                           和Jonathan (Mercury Rev)参与
                                           的"Asleep From Day"和"Dream
                                           On"。Hope在"Asleep From Day"
                                           中迷离冰凉的演唱,将太空飘浮感
                                           的作品带入了深冷、虚幻的区域,
                                           好象一场梦境。而"Dream On"中的
                                           梦境则更为甜美、自然。

                                           ChemicalBrother已经不在干那种
                                           带有金属色泽的体力活了,(暂时
                                           的?)我觉得他们此刻的漂亮体现在
                                           其他地方,如那完美的承上启下,
                                           那美妙的迷幻色彩。说真的,我不
                                           再奢求他们,包括现在的电子乐手
                                           们(前卫实验乐手出外)能在音乐题
                                           材和元素上有着什么大的突破,这
                                           并非是每次听电子/舞曲音乐的情
                                           趣和重点所在,能如此精彩丰富地
                                           "优美"化每一首作品,连贯一气,
                                           相信化学兄弟已经能带领一帮Big
                                           Beat哥们继续前行了,(或者说撇
                                           弃他们独行了?)此刻放弃Big Beat
                                           刻意的刺激,换来自然和坦然,也
                                           很美.
