Long one of the world's most popular rock bands, Germany's pioneering
Scorpions have sold over 20 million albums worldwide and have a fistful of
hit singles to their credit as well. Originally formed in 1968, the Scorps
are unquestionably the most successful rock band to come from the European
continent, and, among many firsts, they were one of the first Western rock
bands ever to play behind the then-Iron Curtain, and their 1989 worldwide
Glastnost-celebratory hit, "Wind Of Change," made them the first Western rock
band ever to meet a Soviet leader at the Kremlin. The band's forte has long
been a potent mixture of pop melodies and skull-crushing riffs, and they kick
up a more potent brew than ever on their debut Atlantic album (and their 13th
studio outing overall), "PURE INSTINCT."
"We followed our instincts, let the music flow, and tried to find the point
of the Scorpions' stinger," says singer and frontman Klaus Meine. "That has
less to do with heavy songs and ballads, and more to do with artistic
development and credibility. The first songs for "PURE INSTINCT" were written
in the autumn of 1994, right after the end of our 'Face The Heat' world tour.
That was a very creative phase, during which such songs as the new album's
first single, 'You And I,' and the Beatles-inspired 'Does Anyone Know' were
written. In the spring of 1995, we met and decided not to pack our bags and
fly off to some studio half-way around the world, but to stay at home and
work in a relaxed way in our own studio in order to make a completely
authentic album."
"PURE INSTINCT" was recorded with the Scorpions' engineer and producer, Erwin
Musper, who was assisted by Peter Kirkman, the band's long-time guitar
technician. "We worked on two or three songs per day, playing various
arrangements, and as soon as we felt, 'that's it,' we went into the studio,"
explains Klaus. When the work in their own Scorpion Sound Studio was
completed, they went to Holland's renowned Wisseloord Studios, where they
recorded further tracks with producer Keith Olsen (Whitesnake, Foreigner) in
December '95 and January '96. As such, "PURE INSTINCT" documents not only the
Scorpions' new ideas, but also the entire spectrum of a style, of a
rock'n'roll vision that has been making its way around the world since the
beginning of the '70s.
With their 1972 debut album, entitled "Lonesome Crow," the Scorpions defined
their own concept of non-Anglo/American-dominated rock. But only after tough
years of playing clubs and small halls did the band attain their
international breakthrough. "Fly To The Rainbow" (1974), "In Trance" (1975),
"Virgin Killer" (1976 - their first gold record in Japan), "Taken By Force"
(1977), and the live document of their first Japanese tour, "Tokyo Tapes"
(1978), all earned the group a considerable international reputation, yet the
best was yet to come. With 1979's "Love Drive," the group finally broke into
the British charts (where they had been well received ever since their debut
at the legendary Marquee Club in 1975).
In 1979, the Scorpions solidified the line-up that would carry them through
the next decade. Michael Schenker (Rudolf's brother, a founding Scorp who
left in the early '70s to join UFO) had filled in on "Love Drive" after Uli
Roth's 1978 departure; Michael was, in turn, replaced by Matthias Jabs, who
joined long-standing members Meine, Rudolf Schenker, bassist Francis
Buchholz, and drummer Herman Rarebell. This line-up debuted with "Animal
Magnet-ism," which - together with the following tour of Germany, England and
America - set the stage for 1982's breakthrough set, "Blackout,"which climbed
into the Top 10 of the Billboard charts. One year later, their appearance as
co-headliners with Van Halen at the US Festival in California (where the
group played to an audience of over 325,000) represented the high point of
the Scorpions' career thus far.
The Scorpions even broke this record with their concert at the first "Rock In
Rio" event in 1985, where the quintet played to over 350,000 fans. And after
the ballad, "Still Loving You," from the "Love At First Sting" album, went
into the German charts, the whole world opened its ears. In 1986, their
performances at the German "Monsters Of Rock" festivals resembled a victory
parade. "It seemed like we were gold medal winners at the Rock'n'Roll
Olympics," Rudolf Schenker enthused.
Their 1988 album, "Savage Amusement"--the last under the direction of their
longtime producer Dieter Dierks--opened up Eastern Europe for the Scorpions,
as the group sold out ten concerts in the then-Soviet Union. In 1989, they
played along with Ozzy Osbourne, Bon Jovi, Motley Crue, and many others at
the "Moscow Peace Festival" in Lenin Stadium. Those and other events left
their mark on the band, resulting in the glasnost hymn, "Winds Of Change"
(from the "Crazy World" album), a song that created a rock document of the
historical changes going on at the time (the song was subsequently recorded
in four different languages). A reception in the Kremlin hosted by Mikhail
Gorbachov in 1991 illustrated the path of a band that had found new weight,
values, and expressive forms in their music.
Further changes were in store for the group following their performance in
Roger Waters's staging of "The Wall" at Berlin's Brandenburg Gate in 1990.
Hamburg-born bassist Ralph Rieckermann replaced Francis Buchholz on the 1993
album, "Face The Heat," and accompanied the group on their next world tour.
Which brings us to "PURE INSTINCT." "The way we worked in the studio this
time was clearly different from the way we've done it in the past," Rudolf
Schenker explains. "When one of us came up with a song, we first sat down in
my living room to arrange the song, and only then did we go into the studio
to record it. In that way, we could capture the full intensity of the song.
And because this time the idea and the execution of it were so close
together, 'PURE INSTINCT' is exactly the right title."
"PURE INSTINCT" contains twelve songs covering many different lyrical topics.
"Writing songs is like being an explorer, always searching for an inspiration
that turns a song into something special," says Klaus. "We tried to set all
of the topics that currently move us to music." Rudolf adds, "As in the past,
our songs are primarily mirror images of our personal experiences, at home or
on tour. This time we also tried to keep a good balance between rock songs
and ballads, although the most important thing for us is to communicate the
best songs with the best atmosphere." The emotional video of "You And I,"
shot in New York under the direction of Marcus Nispel, proves just how well
the band succeeded in its aims.
While every song has its own story, "When You Came Into My Life" has a very
special one. This song, which, like "Wild Child," was produced by Keith
Olsen, was a Scorpions highlight even before it was released. Klaus explains:
"The album was almost finished when Rudolf and I were invited to take part in
a songwriting workshop on Bali in November of last year. With forty
songwriters from the USA, Rudolf and I were the only European representatives.
The point was to build a bridge between Asian and Western culture, and to
write as many songs as possible with Indonesian artists. One of the most
beautiful songs to come out of the sessions is 'When You Came Into My
Life'... the magic of Bali..."
Magic is what the Scorpions will surely create on their upcoming world tour.
"Despite the fact that we enjoy working in the studio, the Scorpions are
still primarily a live band," confirms Klaus. "It should be obvious that we
are very excited about our upcoming tour." Rudolf adds: "After spending so
much time in the studio, we are really hot to get out on tour. We will once
again travel to many exotic places, to Southeast Asia, Russia, Australia, New
Zealand, South America, Mexico and, of course, Europe. And we are especially
looking forward to greeting our many American fans..."
